Placement criteria- If LAS test scores indicate
that the child is an English Language Learner (ELL), parents are notified of
available ESL programs. Parents either accept or refuse in writing available ESL
services for their child(ren).
Instructional Programs-
At each of the six ESL Center School sites, ESL classes are taught by Louisiana
certified ESL teachers who are proficient in English and highly qualified for
the grade level in which they are employed. Students are assigned to a grade
level classroom or the middle/high school counselors schedule them for English
(SL) and Sheltered Content classes as appropriate. Research based methods and
strategies, including differentiated instruction, are implemented in the ESL
classroom to accommodate the strengths and needs of each student in meeting
challenging state academic achievement standards and state content
standards.
Elementary
ESL teachers work with English Language Learners (ELLs) on a pull-out basis for
1-3 hours a day by implementing ESL methods and strategies for English language
skills acquisition and meeting challenging State academic standards. Bilingual
paraprofessionals work with ELLs in content classes and assist with home/school
communication. ESL teachers collaborate with the classroom teacher on
instructional practices and results to ensure that ELLs’ academic needs are
being met.
Middle
School-
ELLs are scheduled into ESL Reading and ESL. English classes taught by ESL
certified teachers; and/or Sheltered ESL Math, Science and Social Studies
classes taught by general education teachers pursuing ESL add-on certification.
ELLs also take P.E. and choose their elective classes and club groups. Bilingual
paraprofessionals work with ELLs in content classes. Classes are conducted on a
1.5 hour block schedule meeting every other day.
High
School-
ELLs are scheduled into ESL, English SL classes taught by ESL and English
certified teachers; and/or Sheltered ESL Math, Science, and Social Studies
classes taught by general education teachers who currently possess/pursuing ESL
add-on certification. ELLs also take P.E. and choose their elective classes and
club groups. University students and bilingual paraprofessionals work with
ELLs in content classes. Classes meet every day for 50 minutes.
